Outsourced Wednesdays: Proper Disposal of Propane Tanks
Outsourcing February 13th, 2008This week’s highlighted task is a good example of handing off those pesky little items that stay way down on the bottom of your todo list– important enough that you can’t just delete them entirely, but less important than everything else that comes along.
Propane tank disposal
I have these little Coleman propane tanks- green things about 10 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. Something tells me I shouldn’t just toss them in the garbage. But I don’t know where to dump them (or have them recycled or whatever). Please find me a place in the great city of Chicago where I can properly dispose of these things.
Stop if you don’t have an answer within 30 minutes of searching/calling.
Thanks,
-Jed

Smaller propane cylinders (for example, the small Coleman grill cylinders) may be put in your regular trash, if they are completely empty (reference PDF)
Otherwise the Springfield EPA is the best reference I have.
Address:
Goose Island 1150 North, North Branch
open T, Th and 1st Saturday of each month.
Disposal is free. (reference from XXXXX at hazchem xxx-xxx-xxxx–she has a license to dispose but will charge and is located in the suburbs). The contact number XXXXX gave me was xxx-xxx-xxxx for the EPA. I called and was transferred around for awhile and ended up at an answering machine of probably the correct person (didn’t leave a message). Typical government agency!

### end task
Next week we’ll go to the other end of the spectrum and show how our assistant helped us sublet our apartment.

This is great stuff. I need to get to start doing this soon.
Wow, great example! Time to dust off the priority 3-4 items in the PDA To-Do list and give them to my VA to plow through.
Reading your post reminded me of a quick project I gave my VA a couple weeks ago. I sell bumper stickers on one of my sites, problem is that there aren’t any good envelope sizes readily available at Office Depot for shipping. I had my VA research envelope sizes and contact companies for more info. Worked beautifully.
Footnote: Jed, I’m so glad to see that your VA is submitting time taken for each task… great idea!
Awesome, keep ‘em coming. I like how you put a time limit on task like this. Looking forward to your next post.
