Cheap Multi-city flights; our first test of remote work
Travel August 16th, 2007We just returned from a 15 day vacation in the Rockies that was truly a vacation; I checked my email once or twice a day and did very little work. The trip we just booked to Mexico, however, won’t be a pure vacation nor “mini-retirement.” Rather, it’s our first big test of how well I can conduct my business from a remote location.
Thanks to a comment left on my cheap travel post, I’ve been using Kayak a lot lately. Today I booked an incredible deal on a multi-city itinerary. Check this out: Chicago -> San Francisco -> Guadalajara -> (stay for 3 weeks in Ajijic, then bus to Sayulita) -> Puerto Vallarta -> Salt Lake City -> Chicago. Total price with taxes and fees and paper ticket shipping: $568.89. Unbelievable. After spending 2 or 3 weeks near in Ajijic near Lake Chapala, we’ll take a bus down to San Pancho and Sayulita for another 4 or 5 weeks. After that it’s back to visit family in Utah for the holidays before returning home to Chicago.
I still use Travelocity when first checking for the lowest price on trips that have completely flexible dates. Once you get it narrowed down to +/- 3 days, Kayak is is the way to go!

Sweet. I’ve used Kayak for in-U.S. flights, but never had the opportunity to go international. But either way, Kayak’s the best!
Jed,
I’ve refined working from wherever over the past few years. I use a core group of tools to make it seamless. First is Vonage (VOIP) for phone calls. I also have an international cell phone from Mobil as a back up. For project management we use Basecamp. When I need to “show” a client or collegue something, I use a screencast program and a USB headset to do a quick movie. Personally, I use iShowU (for the Mac), but Camtasia will do it on Windows. These movies allow me the recipient to hear my voice, see my screen and also play it back for clarity as much as they want. It takes me one step closer to being there.
Good Luck,
Michael

Kayak offers a really good experience through many of their offers. I found out about them through a magazine earlier this year and have been nothing but pleased with them.
Best in your travels with a family,

Kayal works fine for finding fares with the big mexican airlines but for really cheap airfare, try the low cost airlines websites like:
interjet, volaris, vivaaerobus, alma. Some of them offer flights as low as 1 peso plus taxes which comes to around 25 US dollars.
